This article provides the easiest workflow to convert Sony XAVC-S to editable mov with ProRes coedc for post production in Final Cut Pro 7, FCP X on Mac OS X (Yosemite & Mavericks included).

FCP has been updated for the next-generation architecture in the new Mac Pro, providing the high performance when editing and monitoring 4K video. And the latest version- Final Cut Pro 10.1(Final Cut Pro X) adds general QuickTime supports XAVC S Long GOP QFHD and HD. However, there is no luck on the previous version of FCP, version 7. Final Cut Pro 7 has no ability to support XAVC S format yet. So how can we import Sony XAVC S to FCP 7 without hassle?

If you’re having some XAVC S clips from Sony a7S, Sony FDR-AX100, HDR-AS100V, FDR-AX1 to Final Cut Pro 7, don’t worry. There is an easy way to fix the issue. Since Final Cut Pro 7 does not have native editing support for XAVC S footage, you can transcode XAVC S to Prores codec, which has been designed to work especially well as high-quality, high performance editing codecs for Final Cut Pro 7. Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac is the recommended utility to fulfill the task.

This ideal App offers you a best way to get (4K) XAVC S footage into FCP 7 without losing quality. With it, you can transcode all XAVC S files from to FCP 7 natively supported media format on Mac OS X (Yosemite included) with fast encoding speed. What's more, this video converter also provides the optimal presets like MPEG-2, DNxHD, Apple InterMediate Codec for Premiere, Avid MC, FCE, iMovie, etc. Download it and follow the tutorial below.

Step 2: Click the "Format" bar and select Final Cut Pro> Apple ProRes 422(*.mov) as output format, which should work with FCP 7 perfectly.

Tip: If you wanna, you can go to the "Settings" page to customize proper video/audio parameters including Video size, bitrate and fame rate and more.

Step 3: Hit the convert button, it will start converting XAVC S to ProRes .mov for importing to Final Cut Pro 7 immediately. Soon after the conversion, just click “Open” button to get the generated files for natively editing in Final Cut Pro 7 perfectly.

Editor’s Note: For Final Cut Pro X users, you can download and install the XAVC Plug-in for Apple (PDZK-LT2) to import Sony XAVC S files directly. Well, if you can’t install the XAVC Plug-in correctly, you can try the XAVC S to FCP Converter to encode XAVC S to ProRes for using in FCP X smoothly.
