Q: “When I opened FCP 7 on Mac, the XAVC recording from Sony PDW-HD1550 cannot be recognized. Can Final Cut Pro support XAVC files?”

I've seen this asked in various places however nobody from Apple has addressed the issue. Sony PDW-HD1550, a half-rack-size disc recorder which supports recording MPEG HD422 and XAVC Intra HD format. When users got some XAVC files, most of them would like to import these XAVC recording from Sony PDW-HD1550 into FCP 7/X or other editing programs for further editing. But the problem is, the latest high definition XAVC video format introduced by Sony is not supported well by Final Cut Pro. To import Sony PDW-HD1550 XAVC to Final Cut Pro X or FCP 6/7 for editing smoothly, the easy workaround is to rewrap and convert XAVC to Apple ProRes, which ensures maximum editing quality and efficiency when working with Final Cut Pro. It’s a great way to achieve your goal.

How to Convert Sony PDW-HD1550 XAVC to ProRes MOV for Final Cut Pro X/7

The quick workaround is to use the easy-to-use yet professional app Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac which can be used as an ideal Sony XAVC Converter under OS X Snow Leopard (10.6), Lion (10.7), Mountain Lion (10.8), Mavericks(10.9), Yosemite(10.10). With it, you can effortlessly transcode PDW-HD1550 XAVC to ProRes 422, ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 422 Proxy, ProRes 4444 for Final Cut Pro 6/7/X losslessly. Below is how.

Note: If you are also a FCP X user, before you try to do the conversion, don’t forget to make sure that you have installed the Apple ProRes Codec manually since the FCP X asks users to install it by themselves.

Step 1: Load XAVC recordings

Run the XAVC to FCP Converter you just set up. Drag and drop the XAVC files to the Converter. You can also hit Add files button to import videos to the app.

Step 2: Select output format

You just need to go to Final Cut Pro column by choosing "Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov)" as best video format for editing Sony XAVC in Final Cut Pro as well as good video quality.

Tips:
1. You can click "settings" button in the main interface to customize the output video’s parameters, such as resolution, frame rate, etc.

2. By clicking “Edit” button, you can trim, crop the video, or add watermark and adjust effect to the videos which you will convert.

Step 3: Start Converting XAVC to ProRes

Now click "Convert" and let it go. The Mac XAVC Converter supports batch conversion, so if you have lots of XAVC files to convert, check 'Shut down computer after conversion', and you can go away without keeping an eye on it.

When the conversion is done, you can find the output files by clicking "Open" button on the main interface, then you can transfer the Sony PDW-HD1550 XAVC files to Final Cut Pro X or FCP 7 to edit with ease.

Additional Tips:
