"Does iMovie support 4K videos? I got a lot of 4K videos from Canon XC10 and tried to open these 4K videos in iMovie. Nothing happened but got some error message. What's going on?"

Canon’s XC10 is a compact form-factor camera with a 1' sensor that shoots 4K UHD to Cfast and 1920×1080 HD to SD cards in Canon's new XFAVC codec which is a new proprietary video format for the efficient recording of high-image-quality 4K, 2K and HD video footage. It adopts the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 as video codec, which seems not so compatible with iMovie or other NLEs on Mac.

For those who need to edit Canon XC10 4K files in iMovie, we would suggest them to encode XC10 4K MXF footage to AIC .mov before editing in iMovie. I tried several converters, and found a powerful third party program for you-Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac.

In general, this ideal converter can deal with various common videos including XFAVC MXF, MOV, MKV, MTS, MP4 .etc for playing and editing. With it, you can freely transcode Canon XC10 4K XFAVC videos to AIC MOV for editing in iMovie. Besides AIC iMovie codec, it also offers other optimized codecs for NLEs such as Apple ProRes for FCP, MPEG-2 for Premiere, DNxHD for Avid and so on. Now, download the software online and follow the below guide to start Canon XC10 4K to iMovie conversion.
