Learn how to easily convert and import Panasonic HC-VX870 4K footage into Final Cut Pro X, FCP 7 for further editing on Mac (Mavericks, Yosemite included).

Panasonic has announced a new 4K Ultra HD camcorder HC-VX870 that enables you to capture Ultra HD 4K (3840 x 2160) in MP4 format. As it claims, recording in 4K resolution gives you greater flexibility when it comes to editing your video. However, importing and editing 4K video in Final Cut Pro is not as easily as we expect. In this page, my aim is to give you some tips and tricks for working Panasonic HC-VX870 4K in Final Cut Pro. Hope it helps.

The reason why we found that it is difficult to play and edit Panasonic HC-VX870 4K videos with Final Cut Pro is a bit complex. On the one hand, the old version FCP X or Final Cut Pro 6/7 like many editors use 1080p as primary delivery format and will continue to do so for a long time. Only FCP X 10.1 above has added the 4K support. On the other hand, MP4 is not an ideal editing format for FCP.

In order to make the 4K MP4 videos from Panasonic HC-VX870 compatible with Final Cut Pro X/7, the easy workaround is to convert Panasonic HC-VX870 4K files to FCP natively supported formats. If you’re facing the issues, read on to find the detailed solution from the following paragraphs.

How to| Transcoding Panasonic HC-VX870 4K to FCP compatible format

1. Download and install Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac.

Overall, the program is the best 4K Video Converter for Mac. It will create FCP friendly file format- Apple ProRes 422, ProRes 4444 keeping the original quality in OS X Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion and more. Besides FCP, this software can also export professional encoders like DNxHD for Avid, MPEG-2 for Adobe Premiere Pro, AIC MOV for iMovie and more.

2. Launch the 4K MP4 converter. Drag the 4K .mp4 files from Panasonic VX870 to the software. It supports batch conversion and joining multiple video clips into one file.

3. Click the “Format” bar and select Final Cut Pro> Apple PreRes 422(*.mov) as output format.

Tip: Advanced Settings You can click the “Settings” button and video size, bitrate and fame rate are flexible and can be adjusted as you like. Since Final Cut Pro 6/7 and even the Final Cut Pro X can’t handle 4K well, 1080p would be the best settings. Of course, if you wanna get a 4K workflow in FCP, you keep the original video resolution.

4. Hit the convert button to start transcoding Panasonic HC-VX870 4K MP4 to ProRes on Mac OS X with the best 4K to FCP Converter.

After the conversion, click Open to get the output videos. Now you can run the Final Cut Pro and click File --> Import --> Files to import the converted 4K files and edit them in FCP without any trouble.
